Music for other types of ensembles... Brass ChoirFanfare for Enduring Freedom (Grade IV-but requires solid high brass playing)
Composed for the United States Army Europe Band and premiered October 18, 2005 in Eppelheim, Germany with the composer conducting. The North American premier performance was March 13, 2007 by the combined brasses of the Dallas Wind Symphony and the United States Army Field Band at Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas, Texas, the composer conducting. Available for purchase from Lovebird Music. Scored for brass choir and bass drum, this fanfare is a dramatic and powerful opener. Unlike most fanfares, it begins quietly with a solo trumpet, evolves into a rich chorale, builds gradually over "distant rumbling,” then finishes with massive blocks of sound accompanied by resounding thumps of the bass drum. Galaxy Portals (Grade V)
In 2007, the US Army Europe Band & Chorus performed at the championship game of the the National Football League Europa. The afternoon before the game, the band was waiting to come on the field for a sound check, and some of the musicians started playing in the huge concrete service tunnels. The resulting volume and reverb of that acoustic space reminded me of the Meyerson lobby when the Dallas Wind Symphony played my Fanfare for Enduring Freedom. I wasn't planning on entering the DWS Fanfare Competition for a second consecutive year, but decided to strike when inspiration hit. Alas, it was not a winner, but it is still a short, powerful piece for brass and minimal percussion. ChorusWherever the Road May Travel (SAB--Grade III) Composed for the Leonardtown Middle School Advanced Chorus, Stanley Hoopengardner, director. Premiered June 1999. This is a piece from my last year teaching middle school. I wrote Jaguar Dance for my band, and this piece for "Mr. Hoop's" chorus. The lyrics were written by eighth-grader Amanda Chambless.
