In 2007, the US Army Europe Band & Chorus performed at the championship game of the the National Football League Europa. The afternoon before the game, the band was waiting to move on the field for a sound check, and some of the musicians started playing in the huge concrete service tunnels. The resulting volume and reverb of that acoustic space reminded me of the Meyerson lobby when the Dallas Wind Symphony played my Fanfare for Enduring Freedom.
I wasn’t planning on entering the DWS Fanfare Competition for a second consecutive year, but decided to strike when inspiration hit. Alas, it was not a winner, but it is still a short, powerful piece for brass and minimal percussion.
